Moving to a new city can be hard, so for this project I set out to introduce Portland to its newest residents by designing the homepage of a site imagined with their needs in mind. From neighborhood profiles to event listings, I developed this page to encourage everyone to make themselves at home in Maine.
1
I started where all the best projects begin, with the design process. I focused on my audience and my objectives, and then I started sketching and mapping.
2
Next it was on to creating mood boards. I gathered stock photos and meandered through Portland taking photos of my own as I explored possible visual outcomes for the site.
In the end, I created three boards that helped me pin down a final design direction.
3
With a visual direction established, I created various iterations of style tiles to help me finalize all aspects of the design, from typeface to logo to iconography.
4
In the next phase, I created wire frames to conceptualize the layout of the home page.
At this point, I was focused on designing for desktop screens, although I was constantly aware that eventually all elements would have to scale down.

After multiple passes, I created a final design for the homepage in three different breakpoints.
